Traditions’ Top 5 List of Haunted House Attractions in Wisconsin

October. Not only is it the first official month of Fall, but October is also home to one of the country’s most popular holidays; Halloween. In 2016, it was estimated that Americans spent $8.4 billion on candy, costumes, decorations, lights, and other festivities. It is no mystery that Halloween is all about being “scared”, pulling scary pranks on other people, and dressing up in horrifying outfits to scare others and ask for candy in return.

One of the most popular Halloween activities that people like to do around this time of year is go visit a haunted house. Haunted houses have existed for centuries and (the good ones at least) are designed to scare visitors by playing off some type of fear. To do so, these attractions utilize decorations, lights, custom made scenes, and actors to bring these fears into reality for people. It just so happens that Wisconsin is home to some of the country’s best haunted house productions. In this blog, we will be highlighting what we feel to be the top 5 haunted houses in Wisconsin.

1: Burial Chamber – Neenah, WI

Just two hours northeast of Madison in Neenah sits the Burial Chamber haunted house complex. Burial Chamber has been consistently rated as one of the best haunted house complexes in both Wisconsin and the country. Burial Chamber is home to three different haunted house “experiences” with each experience designed to assault your senses differently. “Insanity” and “Adrenaline” are two massive indoor haunted houses while “Phobia” takes place outside in the local backwoods of the complex. Burial Chamber also boasts more than four burial simulators which are said to be the closest experience to actually being buried alive.

2: Dominion of Terror – Sheboygan, WI

Number two on our list is the Dominion of Terror haunted house located in Sheboygan. Every year, the Sheboygan Jaycees organizes and constructs this local attraction to raise money for local charities, while simultaneously providing attendees with scares that they will never forget. The haunted house is composed of 20 different rooms that take the course of a year to teardown and reassemble again. The house is staffed with more than 75 volunteers and is one of the most popular attractions in Sheboygan during Halloween.

3: Dead by Dawn Dead & Breakfast – Manitowoc, WI

The Dead by Dawn Dead & Breakfast located in Manitowoc is a haunted house experience unlike any other. The experience itself takes place in a historical building in downtown Manitowoc that dates back to 1851. Once you arrive, you will be asked to pick a victim room. Such rooms include Coulrophobia for clown lovers, or the Nightmare room where guests can experience all of their fears at once. The Dead by Dawn Dead & Breakfast operates year round for anyone daring enough to stay the night.

4: Dreadwood Haunted Forest – Hudson, WI

Number four on our list is the Dreadwood Haunted Forest located in Hudson. Dreadwood is based entirely outside and is immersed in the dense forest of northwestern Wisconsin. Once the experience begins, a guide will lead you into the half-mile long path that winds its way through the woods. Because the experience takes place outside in the middle of a forest, once you enter you must follow the guide all the way through. Dreadwood is open for eight nights only during the month of October, making the experience extra special if you are lucky enough to snag a spot on this unforgettable haunted tour.
